“You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.” Matthew 7:16-18 NASB

Jesus illustrates having discernment when dealing with false prophets by comparing a tree with its fruit. You can identify a tree or bush by the fruit it produces. You will not find a pine tree producing peaches. A peach tree produces peaches. A pine tree produces pine cones. A good tree produces good fruit. A bad tree produces bad fruit. A false teacher will become known when he produces false and even evil fruit. A good teacher produces good and holy fruit.

Lord Jesus, help me to be discerning by carefully observing those who teach and lead. Let my life produce only good and holy fruit.
