“But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” Matthew 6:3-4 NASB
Jesus continues to teach about giving to others as an act of worship. The wrong motive for giving to the poor and needy is to be noticed by others. Instead Jesus says that for giving to be a true act of worship one must give in secret. Although giving is often a part of public worship with other people, the motive for giving must be to glorify and honor God without seeking personal recognition. In Acts 4 Barnabas gave to the needy, and God was glorified. In contrast in Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira gave with the wrong motive and suffered the consequences for their sin.
Lord Jesus, I desire to give in ways that would glorify and honor You. Help my giving to be an act of worship.
