The Sword of the Spirit
Ephesians 6:17b

The Upward Look
    by Max D. Hutto,

“and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,” Ephesians 6:17 ESV

The Roman soldier used his sword to defend himself against the enemy’s attack and to offensively attack the enemy. Likewise the believer uses the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, as a defensive and also an offensive weapon. Guided by the Holy Spirit the believer claims the promises and proclaims the truths found in the Bible. The power of Scripture can defeat the enemy’s advances (Matt. 4:3-11) and can pierce the soul, judging the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Heb. 4:12).

Lord Jesus, help me to take a firm grasp, holding tight to the Word of God. Fill my heart, mind, and thoughts with Scripture so that I may stand firm and may proclaim Your Word, accurately handling the truths of the Word.
