The Breastplate of Righteousness
Ephesians 6:14b
The Upward Look
by Max D. Hutto,
“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,” Ephesians 6:14 ESV
The Roman soldier’s breastplate was made of metal plates and chains covering both front and back to protect the vital organs in his torso. For the believer, this second piece of spiritual armor is the righteousness found in Jesus. As he stands before God, this positional righteousness covers the believer in Christ’s purity and holiness. He is declared innocent and righteous having been cleansed by the blood through faith in Jesus. The believer is also to live in practical righteousness, striving to repel, rebuff, and repulse every sin in his daily life.
Lord Jesus, You have made me righteous through Your blood. Protect me from the blows of evil, temptation, and sin, that I may live righteously.
