The Original Marriage Covenant
Ephesians 5:31
The Upward Look
by Max D. Hutto,
“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” Ephesians 5:31 CSB
Having alluded to this foundational verse in what he has taught previously, Paul finally quotes Genesis 2:24 where God establishes the marriage covenant between a man and a woman. Leaving their parents, leaving all others, the husband and wife are joined together to become one flesh. The word “joined” means to cleave, to cling, to hold tightly to each other, to be united as one, to be glued and fastened firmly together, forming one body.
Lord Jesus, I marvel at how special, unique, and sacred the marriage bond is. May my marriage be a testimony to this great truth and bring glory to You.
