“But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them–bringing swift destruction on themselves.” 2 Peter 2:1 NIV
Peter begins a lengthy section dealing with false teachers who have come into the church and spread heresies in an attempt to corrupt the faith. In the Old Testament there were numerous false prophets who spoke contrary to God’s Word with the intent to deceive God’s people. In today’s church there continues to be a multitude of deceiving false teachers. They may appear to be godly and pretend to follow God, but ultimately they deny the true Lordship of Christ by speaking “watered down” half-truths, complete lies, and heresies that lead to destruction.
Lord Jesus, as I listen to others, help me to be discerning about what is true and false. Help me to know Your Word, the Bible, so that I may know the truth and not be deceived by false teachers.
