“In the same way, you younger men, be subject to the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5 HCSB
Two important principles for believers are found in the verse. First, there is a respect and honor that is to be shown to ones’ elders. The word “elders” can mean older people and can also mean the leaders of the church, the pastors. Both groups should receive respect. Second, everyone should strive to have the attitude of humility. The word “clothe” here means to put on an apron towel of a servant. Peter may have been thinking about Jesus who clothed himself with a servant’s towel to wash the disciples’ feet. That was a humble act of service and an example for all disciples to serve one another.
Lord Jesus, help me to show respect and humbly serve others. Fill my life with the attitudes and actions that reflect Your love, grace, and mercy.
