“Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed.” 1 Peter 5:1 NASB
Because of the persecution, the suffering, and the judgment the believers faced, Peter encourages them and their church leaders in this final chapter of his letter. While the word “elder” refers to an older person, in the church it means a pastoral leader. Instead of an apostle, Peter uses “elder” here to describe himself as one of many church pastors. Peter was a witness of the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ. He along with other believers will be a participant in the glory of the coming kingdom of Christ.
Lord Jesus, encourage Your church and her leaders this day to stand strong in the faith. In spite of the possible persecution I may face, help me to be a witness, sharing with others Your love, mercy, and grace.
