“Submit to every human institution because of the Lord.” 1 Peter 2:13a HCSB
The word “submit” brings many images to our minds, and in our modern world it sometime carries a bad connotation. The word literally means to “arrange under,” as the military organizes in ranks under authority. The word “submit” conveys the idea of voluntarily placing oneself under the authority of another. It is setting aside one’s own personal wishes and desires to follow another person or entity. The believer is to set aside his desires and instead obediently follow the Lord’s commands, including being in subjection to all human authority.
Lord Jesus, I want to obey Your Word. Help me to be respectful of those in authority so that because of my actions You will receive glory.
