“Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.” 1 Peter 1:22 NIV

Jesus said that others would know his disciples by their love for one another. This mark of love is evident because the believer has been purified, made clean and righteous in God’s sight. The word “purified” is in the perfect tense thus stating that this purification happened at one point, conversion, and continues on into the present time. The phrase “obeying the truth” is often used to describe a person’s conversion when he placed his faith, his trust and obedience, in the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Lord. This faith in Christ compels one to have a deep, sincere love for other believers. Just as Jesus loved, His disciples are to love.

Lord Jesus, Your deep love is evident in the life You lived. Help me to show this fervent love in my life today.
