“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 John 4:11 NASB
Again John calls his readers “beloved.” John is encouraging these dearly loved friends to love one another. The reason they are to love is because “God so loved us.” This love refers to God’s great demonstration of His love in Jesus’ death on the cross to pay for sins of the believers. God’s great love is the motive for the believers to love one another. The word “ought” conveys a strong meaning of moral obligation. The believer is bound under a great obligation to love. God’s love motivates the believer to love others with that same kind of love.
Lord Jesus, I stand amazed at Your great love that gave so much that I can have an eternal relationship with You. Help me today to express that love in my actions.
