“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19 NASB

Our society values getting and keeping all the treasures it can in life. “Lay up” refers to the habit or lifestyle of piling up worldly treasures. Earthly things ultimately decay and bring no lasting satisfaction. Moths eat through fabric. Rust corrodes metals. Thieves will find a way to steal. Jesus states that the righteous person must not have a lifestyle of hoarding earthly things, but instead lay up heavenly treasure.

Lord Jesus, while my newest gadget is soon out-dated or broken, You and Your Word are forever. Teach me not to lust after things but find satisfaction in You.
