“It was also said, Whoever divorces his wife must give her a written notice of divorce. But I tell you, everyone who divorces his wife, except in a case of sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” Matthew 5:31-32 HCSB

Jesus gives the third of His contrasting statements dealing with righteousness that goes beyond action to attitude and character. The traditional law stated that it was very easy for a man to divorce his wife by giving her a written certificate of divorce. A divorced woman had no rights nor property and was often considered an adulteress and prostitute. Jesus raised the standard of righteousness related to marriage and the place of women in society. He stressed the seriousness of marriage and its intended lifelong commitment.

Lord Jesus, our culture today has such a low regard for marriage. Help me live a righteous life that honors Your high ideals.
