“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28 HCSB

Jesus gives the second of His contrasting statements in the Sermon on the Mount. He states that the law says do not commit the act of adultery. But to be righteous goes beyond action to attitude, beyond conduct to character. The righteous person does not lust in his heart. Lust is one of the driving emotions for adultery. Lust means to gaze upon with strong desire to possess. Lust begins in the mind and heart and then forges on to action. Jesus states that the righteous person must control his thoughts and desires.

Lord Jesus, I desire to live righteously and honor You in all that I do. Help me to think only thoughts that would be pure and holy.
