Fear and Comfort
Luke 2:8-9

The Upward Look
    by Max D. Hutto,

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.” Luke 2:8-9 KJV

Near Bethlehem the shepherds were caring for the sheep. Many of these lambs were destined to be sacrificed in the Temple in Jerusalem. In the quietness of a normal night in the fields, suddenly without warning, the shepherds’ world changed. Panic and fear overtook them. Speaking words of comfort, God’s angel told the shepherds to fear not because there was good news of the birth of the Savior, the sacrificial Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Lord God, in a world that has quickly changed and become terribly frightening, I still find comfort and peace in the good news of the birth of the Savior, Christ the Lord.
