“She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.” 1 Peter 5:13 NIV

In typical pattern for that time period, Peter concludes his letter with greetings to his readers from the believers with him. The inclusion of “Babylon” as his location has long caused confusion among scholars. The obvious place would be the ancient city in Mesopotamia which lay in ruins, yet there is no evidence Peter was ever there. Many scholars believe that Babylon was a disguised figurative term for Rome, symbolizing those opposed to God for there was great persecution of believers in Rome. Mark, Peter’s son in the faith, is considered by many scholars to be John Mark who had traveled with Paul and who wrote the gospel of Mark.

Lord Jesus, I am encouraged by the warm greetings of fellow believers. Help me to treat others with the same courtesy, kindness, and compassion.
