“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13 NASB

John gives his final and main reason for writing this letter. His purpose was to give assurance to those who believe in Jesus, that they have everlasting life. This assurance comes not from what they have done, but from whom Jesus is and what Jesus has done. Jesus, the Son of God, paid the price for sin by shedding His blood on the Cross. He is the one who provides salvation, the forgiveness of sin, and eternal life. The believers have placed their total trust in Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Thus, the believers “know” they have eternal life in Jesus. “Know” means absolute, confident assurance.

Lord Jesus, I know I have eternal life because You provide it. You are the one and only way to salvation. Help me to tell others about this great assurance.
